The British Council is pleased to announce the finalists for a prestigious award celebrating the outstanding achievements of the UK’s international alumni. They are selected by our panel of judges as best representatives for the impact of UK higher education in their chosen career path and the impact they have made for the development of Egypt.

Alumni Awards Finalists 2018

Ms. Sandra Nashaat

Sandra Nashaat is an Egyptian movie director. She obtained her Bachelor's degree from the Higher Institute of Cinema, Filmmaking Department (1992) and Bachelor's degree in French Literature (1993). Ms. Nashaat started her career directing successful video clips. Her first art work was the short movie LAST WINTER and a documentary called AL MOVIOLA. The first movie she directed was MABROOK & BOLBOL, followed by famous WHY DID YOU MAKE ME LOVE YOU?, and MALAKI ALEXANDRIA.

 

Sherif Kamel

Vice president for information management, the American University in Cairo. Judge for the Professional Achievement Category

Kamel is professor of management and founding dean of AUC School of Business. He is a board member of Education for Employment Egypt. He was chairman of the Association of Graduates and Trainees from Britain in Egypt, executive VP of AmCham Egypt and member of the World Bank Knowledge Advisory Commission. He is an Eisenhower Fellow and holds a PhD in Information Systems from London School of Economics, an MBA and a BA in Business Administration and an MA in Islamic Art and Architecture from AUC

 

Dr. Yasser El Shayeb

Dr. Elshayeb is the Director of the Embassies of Knowledge Initiative at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the coordinator of EU programs on Higher Education, the advisor to the Minister of Higher Education for International Cooperation, and associate professor of Engineering at Cairo University. He graduated from Cairo University with a degree in Engineering, and obtained his PhD from Nancy School of Mines in France. Dr. Elshayeb have always been active in the fields of Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation, Risk Assessment, Project management, and Research. He was the Director of the Centre for Documentation of Cultural and Natural heritage and, for many years, acted as The Egyptian National Contact Point for European research programs.

 

Encouraging engagement

Going back a couple of sessions behind, this session started by reflecting on how children and adults learning differ. Open discussions between participants interestingly resulted in accentuating the fact that we all have the same questions and problems. Participants shared their observations on what motivates adult learners, discussing what the techniques for successful motivation are.

Hania Sholkamy

Associate Research Professor at the American University in Cairo (AUC) , Judge for the Social Impact Category

Hania Sholkamy is an Egyptian anthropologist with a PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Sciences. She obtained her BA and MA from the American University in Cairo (AUC). Hania has been a Research Associate at the International Population Council and was the Ioma Evans Pritchard Junior Research Fellow at St. Anne’s College, Oxford University. Her research publications are mainly in the fields of reproductive health, gender, population and qualitative methods. 

Encouraging reflection

For teaching to succeed, reflection is a must. John Dewey was the first scholar to shed a light on the reflection practice, and in this session, participants are taking a closer look at the importance of reflection for adult learners, teams, CPD programmes and CoPs. 

Participants learnt about different reflective models and how they make the best use of remote delivery as an opportunity to develop reflection, along with tools and activities that can be used for reflection.

Yosri Fouda

Yosri Fouda is an investigative reporter, journalist and  a TV host. He graduated from Cairo University with a degree in Mass Communication, and later obtained his master's degree at the American University in Cairo (AUC). Yosri started off his career by joining BBC, here he worked as a reporter and took part in establishing BBC Arabic service. In 1996 Yosri joined newly formed Al Jazeera channel as a UK and Western Europe correspondent and in the following year, he established Al Jazeera's office in London. He was one of the channels's star figures until he resigned in 2009. Soon after his resignation Yosri moved to the Cairo-based ONTV Egyptian Channel to host a talk show AKHER KALAM (The final word).

Dr. Mohamed Said Mahfouz

TV Journalist and fimmaker, Advisor to the Chairman of Al-Ahram

Dr Mahfouz is a TV journalist and filmmaker. He holds several positions, including Advisor to the Chairman of Al-Ahram, TV anchor at Extra News Channel where he is one of its founders, and Director of the Training Centre for the news sector at the United Media Services Company.

In 2021, Mahfouz won the UK Alumni Award in the culture and creativity category for his career achievements. Mahfouz obtained a Master’s degree in filmmaking from Royal Holloway University under the Chevening scholarship programme, followed by a PhD from the same university in New Media.

The highlight of Mahfouz career which he considers his biggest achievement is Mediatopia, a media training and production house which he founded 10 years ago, from which most of the current media figures graduated.

2010 - Hazem M. Shoirah

Throughout his life Hazem has nurtured his mind through his readings and writings and through his studies that he's followed all the way up until medical school in Egypt. Hazem's interests include drawing, comic art and both Arabic and English poetry. In 2005 he started a small culture community book club, a non-commercial project focusing on the improvement of one's knowledge, culture and insight. He is determined to realise his faith in the individual and his dreams of a more loving community.

Dr. Mona Allouba

Manager of the Genetics and Genomics unit, Aswan Heart Centre (AHC)

Dr. Mona Allouba is a Post-Doctoral Researcher and Manager of the Genetics and Genomics unit at Aswan Heart Centre (AHC) – Magdi Yacoub Foundation. She completed her PhD studies in Cardiovascular Clinical Research Medicine at Imperial College London in collaboration with AHC in 2020. 

Prior to her employment at AHC, she pursued a Master’s degree in Cancer Biology at University College London and was awarded the Top Academic Achievement award. Her research interests span the genetics of inherited cardiac conditions, particularly hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, with the aim to improve diagnosis, disease management and potential treatment of this life-threatening disease.

In February 2023, she received the “Science and Sustainability Study UK Alumni Award” from the British Council for her outstanding achievements.
