About this course

Our General English courses are designed to improve every aspect of your English. Each lesson has clear objectives that contribute to your overall progress and moves you closer to achieving your language goals.

In every class, your teacher will provide you with structured learning tasks and monitor your progress, providing you with feedback, correction and guidance to help you become better, more fluent and more confident when communicating in English.

Our courses can help you improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, and whilst the focus is on using English naturally, grammar and vocabulary are developed as well.

Practise Sessions:

Attend practice sessions to enhance your English outside the classroom in a fun and friendly environment. 

What are Practise sessions?

Practise sessions is a free programme that gives you an additional opportunity to practice your English outside of the class room. 

Each term you can attend a wide range of language-based sessions that can help you practice your English in a friendly, inclusive, and stimulating way.

This gives you the chance to meet other students and interact with British Council teachers.

The right level for you

We offer General English courses at every level. We have 7 levels of ability from  pre-elementary  for those with very basic English skills right up to  advanced level for those who have already mastered many aspects of  language.

If you’re a new British Council student you’ll need to take a placement test to find out which is the right course level for you. These tests take place in our teaching centres in Agouza, Heliopolis and Alexandria. You can book your placement test online on here.

How will I be assessed? 

Each level (e.g. intermediate, advanced, etc) is divided into four courses. The courses are made up of 10 lessons that are 2.5 hours long and are held twice a week. At the end of the course you’ll receive a grade based on your progress in speaking, listening, reading and writing. 

There will be some assessed tasks during the course. If you pass, you’ll progress to the next level. If you are not successful,  you can repeat the course. 

You must attend at least 8 out of 10 lessons to pass.

What course materials do I need to buy?

You will need to buy a textbook in time for your first lesson. They’re available at the British Council bookshops in Agouza and Heliopolis. Students at our Alexandria centre will be able to buy textbooks during class time in the first week of term, from the bookshop at our partner premises. If you tell the clerk the course you’re taking, they’ll know which book to give you.

Bookshop opening times

  • Agouza is open Sunday to Thursday, 10.00–14.30 and 16.00–20.30. 
  • Heliopolis is open Saturday to Thursday, 09.00–19.00. For the first two weeks of term it will also open at these times on Friday.
  • Alexandria has a bookshop open in the first week of each term on our partner premises, the British School of Alexandria, where classes take place.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are only available if the course is cancelled by the British Council or if you can prove that you’re unable to complete the course due to serious illness, a loss or bereavement, or another personal trauma.

If a refund is offered, you will be issued with a course credit. This credit must be used within six months. Read more about our refund policy.
