2020 - Mahmoud Tareq Beshir

Mahmoud is an oncologist, undergoing his training as a resident. He was a Chevening scholar in 2017, completing his master’s degree in cancer science at the University of Glasgow, graduating with merit in November 2018 and receiving the Graduate Skills Award. He is currently continuing his studies for a second master’s degree in clinical oncology at Ain Shams University; as well as continuing his work in medicine. he is an avid volunteer, participating in numerous activities.

Ahmed Osama Abdulrahman’s leadership of project teams was pivotal in achieving the successful start-up of flagship oil, gas & petrochemicals projects in Egypt, which contributed towards meeting domestic energy demand and achieving self-sufficiency. Ahmed is currently participating in Ministry of Petroleum’s modernisation project to unleash the sector’s full potential and fulfil Egypt’s aspirations of becoming an energy hub.

After completing his PhD in 2004 in Marketing, focusing on ‘Technology Transfer associated with Foreign Investments to Egypt.’ Dr Ahmed is currently setting-up a new food processing complex capitalizing on high quality local produce. He was the former Chairman of ‘Reef’. Before that, he was Chairman and CEO of BiscoMisr; and GM Kellogg Egypt. Ahmed was also the Senior Counsellor to the Chairman of the General Authority for Investment.

First Secretary Political at the British Embassy Cairo

Clem is the First Secretary Political at the British Embassy Cairo. Before coming to Cairo, he worked on Israel and Palestine at the Foreign Office in London, as Head of the Middle East Peace Process Team and as an analyst. He has also worked at the UK’s Department for Business, focusing on trade policy and economic development.

He has a BA in French and Arabic and a Master's in Middle Eastern Studies from Oxford University.

Free your will

This initiative uses coaching and mentoring sessions to develop teenagers by helping them to identify their dreams, fulfil their potential and  set a plan to achieve their dreams. The group is doing this through a workshop they designed themselves, which includes many interactive activities. The cost of this initiative costs is fully covered by the community. It has also involved creating partnerships with other community-based organisations which provided facilities and venues-Think Tank.

Movie Nights

Active Citizens volunteers saw that films could be a great trigger for dialogue about local and global issues.  Films were screened in different cultural centres across two governorates. Following each screening there was a question and answer session to explore the relevance of the film and reflect on its main values and messages in relation to Active Citizenship. Issues discussed related to reconciliation, stereotypes, inclusion, co-existence and special needs rights. 

 

Nile Awareness

This initiative aims at increasing young people’s awareness about the Nile and water conservation. The project will organise training workshops for young people to build their capacities on the issue of the Nile and water; later this will be cascaded to local communities in their villages and neighbourhoods on the right attitudes for water conservation. The project will also use competitions and outdoor activities as an attractive tool to spread their messages.

 

Professor Ehab Abdel-Rahman

Professor Abdel-Rahman holds a doctoral degree in physics from University of Utah, USA. Joined the American University in Cairo in 2006 as an assistant professor of physics. He received tenure and promoted to associate professor rank in 2010. He was elected as the chair of the Department of Physics and since 2011 he serves as the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research, and the Director of Yousef Jameel Science and Technology Research Centre at the School of Sciences and Engineering. 

Upper Egyptian Women in Local Popular Councils

This social action project focuses on raising awareness about the importance of participation by women, as voters and candidates, in local popular council elections as a way of fighting corruption at the grassroots level. Seminars and home visits were organised, and a number of female candidates were identified and motivated to run for elections.  The next step is to raise awareness about the law and responsibilities of elected officials and executive bodies, clauses related to women.
