The British Council is pleased to announce the finalists for a prestigious award celebrating the outstanding achievements of the UK’s international alumni. They are selected by our panel of judges as best representatives for the impact of UK higher education in their chosen career path and the impact they have made for the development of Egypt.

Alumni Awards Finalists 2018

Nick Baguley

Nick has worked at the British Council, Egypt as a CELTA tutor, teacher mentor and academic manager since 2008. Over the last 25 years he has managed CELTA courses in twelve countries across five continents. He holds an MA in Professional Development in Teacher Education and is currently completing a PhD in Applied Linguistics. He is also the Joint Chief Assessor for the CELTA award for the Middle East and North Africa.

Nile Awareness

This initiative aims at increasing young people’s awareness about the Nile and water conservation. The project will organise training workshops for young people to build their capacities on the issue of the Nile and water; later this will be cascaded to local communities in their villages and neighbourhoods on the right attitudes for water conservation. The project will also use competitions and outdoor activities as an attractive tool to spread their messages.

 

Professor Ehab Abdel-Rahman

Professor Abdel-Rahman holds a doctoral degree in physics from University of Utah, USA. Joined the American University in Cairo in 2006 as an assistant professor of physics. He received tenure and promoted to associate professor rank in 2010. He was elected as the chair of the Department of Physics and since 2011 he serves as the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research, and the Director of Yousef Jameel Science and Technology Research Centre at the School of Sciences and Engineering. 

Upper Egyptian Women in Local Popular Councils

This social action project focuses on raising awareness about the importance of participation by women, as voters and candidates, in local popular council elections as a way of fighting corruption at the grassroots level. Seminars and home visits were organised, and a number of female candidates were identified and motivated to run for elections.  The next step is to raise awareness about the law and responsibilities of elected officials and executive bodies, clauses related to women.

2020 - Mahmoud Tareq Beshir

Mahmoud is an oncologist, undergoing his training as a resident. He was a Chevening scholar in 2017, completing his master’s degree in cancer science at the University of Glasgow, graduating with merit in November 2018 and receiving the Graduate Skills Award. He is currently continuing his studies for a second master’s degree in clinical oncology at Ain Shams University; as well as continuing his work in medicine. he is an avid volunteer, participating in numerous activities.

Dina Aboughazala

Business and Innovation Award, City, University of London

Dina is a media entrepreneur, a bilingual journalist and a journalism trainer and speaker. She spent the last 14 years working for BBC Monitoring as a digital journalist and then as a senior journalist. Her work involved reporting day-to-day political, social, economic, cultural and media developments in Arab countries.

She is the founder of Egab; a media startup that empowers local journalists from across the Middle East and Africa to get published in regional and international media outlets.

Dina Elabd

University of Cambridge 

Professional Achievement Award.

Dina is an internationally published children’s author and researcher. She represents Egypt as a Board member of the Egyptian Board of Books for Young Readers (EBBY), the local IBBY chapter. She is also a published books for underprivileged children and refugees in Jordan. Dina studied at the University of Cambridge in the strongest Children’s Literature department worldwide and this enriched her knowledge and capabilities.

A visionary for social entrepreneurship and a pioneer of women-led and gender-focused development initiatives for over 30 years, Iman Bibars is the Vice President and Global Diaspora Leader of Ashoka: Innovators for the Public and the Regional Director of Ashoka Arab World.

 

Louise Manicolo

Louise is an experienced teacher and trainer with over 23 years working in the ELT field. She has been a full-time CELTA tutor since 2013, giving courses throughout the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East. As well as her interest in teacher development, Louise has enjoyed a diverse career working in the UK state system, large English academies, and UK universities as an EAP lecturer.
