The British Council is pleased to announce the finalists for a prestigious award celebrating the outstanding achievements of the UK’s international alumni. They are selected by our panel of judges as best representatives for the impact of UK higher education in their chosen career path and the impact they have made for the development of Egypt.

Alumni Awards Finalists 2018

Victoria Taranova

A linguist and translator by education, Victoria has dedicated her professional life to teaching English as a foreign language and ELT methodology. Her 25 years of experience have seen her as a teacher of English, an assistant director of studies, a teacher trainer, and a Cambridge speaking examiner, CEM, and CELT-P/S, TTT and CELTA tutor. Having observed more than 1000 CELTA lessons, she strongly believes in the transformational power of Cambridge CELTA. 

2017 - Yasmin Samir

Yasmine is a 21-year old student in her 3rd year at the zoology department of the Faculty of Science, Alexandria University. She is keen to spread academic and scientific knowledge to the young. To fulfill this passion, she worked as an academic committee member at the Model UN Security Council, which aimed to introduce political life to people from 12 to 16 years old. She also participated in ‘Science festivity’ to show school students different scientific experiments. 

 

 

Amr Waked

Amr Waked is an Egyptian film, television and stage actor graduated from the American University in Cairo with a degree in political science. He worked full-time as a stock trader and moonlit as an actor before fully committing to his acting career. Amr got his big break in 2001 with ASHAB WALA BUSINESS (Friends Or Business). He got his first lead role in DEIL EL SAMAKA (The Fish's Tail) for which he won the Best Actor Award at the Alexandria International Film Festival. 

 

Diana Abu Zayed - Palestine

Diana – an English teacher from Palestine – looks back on how the CoP was an added value to her as it gave her the opportunity to learn new technical skills. She learnt how not to be an authoritative leader but a facilitator. The CoP programme opened new doors for her, allowing her to become an international educator and participate in a UNESCO conference on the world’s Teacher’s Day, boosting her confidence as an educator.

Futures Team

This youth development initiative was established in Assiut University and is now delivered in other universities as well. The volunteers work to build the capacities of their fellow students by offering training, which includes soft skills, management, and business entrepreneurship in addition to Active Citizens.  They have  delivered 15 workshops in partnership with other training institutions. They provide their services at a discounted rate for  Assiut University.

Mahmoud Hafez

Mahmoud Hafez (Winner)

Entrepreneurial Award

University of Leeds

Hafez established ‘SurgiNovi’ to commercially exploit the novel techniques that came out of his PhD project at the University of Leeds. This innovation is called patient specific templates (PST) for total knee replacement. He applied PST on 300 cases including 45 for a charity. His clinical training in Yorkshire hospitals helped in the completion of his Medical Degreeand the publication of more than 60 of his scientific papers.

 

Nevine Sharaf

Chevening Scholarship Programme Manager, British Embassy in Cairo

Nevine is the Chevening Scholarship Programme Manager at the British Embassy in Cairo. She holds a master’s in public policy and administration from AUC and has 20 years’ experience in education programs and project management. She has worked over 10 years with the British Chevening Scholarships and alumni relations. Before this, Nevine managed professional exams at the British Council and worked with CARE International and IFAD-UN on poverty reduction projects, showcasing her diverse expertise.

Osama Elbeyaly

Osama Elbeyaly is an experienced CELTA tutor and teacher trainer with extensive experience in a wide variety of contexts. He has been delivering Face-to-Face and online CELTA courses with the British Council Egypt since 2018. As a Senior Teacher, he trained novice and experienced English teachers working for the British Council in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, universities, and international schools.His areas of interests include feedback on teacher performance, genre analysis, and writing studies.

Professional Achievement Award.

Sherif is an international law expert. He founded Levari LLP in association with Pitmans, an international law firm based in Cairo. In 2013 he launched the Levari Entrepreneur Model (LEM) Which helps start-ups with their legal services. Over 360 start-ups have made use of the LEM. Today, Levari is ranked in the top ten law firms in Egypt and has more than 75 clients with offices in Cairo and London.
