The British Council is pleased to announce the finalists for a prestigious award celebrating the outstanding achievements of the UK’s international alumni. They are selected by our panel of judges as best representatives for the impact of UK higher education in their chosen career path and the impact they have made for the development of Egypt.

Alumni Awards Finalists 2018

2011 - Mahmoud Abu Khedr

Mahmoud is a 3rd year student at the University of Alexandria’s Faculty of Engineering, Mechanical Department. He is interested in automotive science, he enjoys playing volleyball and making projects around robot fights. He is a member of the Committee of Culture at the Student Union and a member of the Society of Automotive Engineering. Mahmoud worked on a special programme for space technology and satellite building. He participated in an International Science and Engineering Fair in the USA. 

Disabled Women’s Right to Participate in Political Life

     Set of training sessions on elections, advocacy and sign language, and different political systems. The training was followed by a final conference with a keynote guest speaker and an open discussions with community beneficiaries.  This included discussions on profiling disabled people in Egypt, the importance of their role in the political life of the country and how they can promote themselves 

(Aswan, Cairo and Beheira, 2014).

 

Hesham Sallam

Science and Sustainability Award

University of Oxford

Hesham is an Egyptian palaeontologist and the founder of the Mansoura University Vertebrate Palaeontology Center (MUVP-C), the first vertebrate palaeontology programme in the Middle East. He led the discovery and description of Mansourasaurus shahinae, a species of sauropod dinosaur from Egypt, which has improved understanding of the prehistory of Africa during the latest Cretaceous period. His work has helped popularise palaeontology in Egypt.

LOLtopia

This initiative provides various skills and capacity building activities for young people and is fully cost recovered. LOLtopia is designed with three strands that include: 

GoTOPia: which aims to enhance English language proficiency.

Geekotopia: a one month course aiming to enhance the basic knowledge of coding

Softopia : delivering presentations in an effective way , enhancing the communication skills of the participants through two weeks of classes and a final project 

 

Sherif Kamel

Professor and Dean of the Onsi Sawiris School of Business

Kamel is a professor of management and dean of the Onsi Sawiris School of Business at AUC, where he was VP for information management. An Eisenhower Fellow, he chairs the AACSB International Board and holds leadership roles in CEMS and the Global Business Schools Network. With a PhD from LSE and degrees from AUC, his expertise spans digital transformation, IT in emerging economies, and entrepreneurship. Kamel has authored 300+ works, including Leading Change in Challenging Times.

Tamer El-Khouly

University College London (UCL) 

Entrepreneurial Award

Dr Tamer El-Khouly is a lecturer in architecture and design studies in Ain Shams University and a research scholar in Dyson School of Engineering, Imperial College London. He founded Tamer El‐Khouly Studio where he is currently the principal architect & design manager, he designed and supervised several projects in Egypt (in Cairo and Sharm El Shiekh) and in the UK as well. 

 

The Red Sea in Colours

The project involves renovating one of Al Qusair's historic streets (Al-Sakeefa) in order to return it to its former glory, turning the street into an open gallery for visitors, displaying 400 images showcasing the history of the old city. This will be combined with awareness raising campaigns focusing on how to maintain and preserve the renovated buildings that are of such cultural importance. The initiative is expected to finish by the end of 2016.

 

Abeer Shakweer

University of Nottingham

Social Impact Award

She is the Advisor to the Egyptian Minister of Communications and Information Technology for social responsibility and services. Her work was instrumental in changing the lives of many people from vulnerable and marginalised groups including persons with disabilities, orphans, inhabitants of slum and rural areas. Her ambition is to support other counties in the Arab region and Africa to empower the marginalized groups using Information Technologies.

 

Ahmed Abd-Elhamid

The University of Edinburgh

Elevating Egypt's innovation landscape, Ahmed, an alumnus of The University of Edinburgh, excels as an Innovation Program Manager at the Arab African International Bank. With a decade of entrepreneurial and corporate experience and a Master’s degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, he merges entrepreneurship and tech with finance, revolutionizing banking solutions through open innovation models touching thousands of lives.

 

Ahmed Elsharkawi

Royal Holloway, University of London

Ahmed is a seasoned media executive with nearly 30 years of experience in the Middle Eastern media industry.Passionate about storytelling, he has developed over 600 hours of scripted drama, from sitcoms to premium streaming content. At Netflix, he led the Arabic scripted team, delivering hits like Alrawabi School for Girls and Finding Ola. A Chevening Scholar,he holds an MA in Producing for Film & Television from Royal Holloway, University of London,and has driven impactful content in the region
