When journalist Marwa Ben Massoud joined a British Council English course during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, she was looking for personal growth. What she found was a transformative journey that boosted her confidence, expanded her professional horizons, and opened doors to international opportunities.

Marwa Ben Massoud has spent over a decade as a journalist with Tunisian Radio, where communication is at the heart of everything she does. But in 2020, as the world changed during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Marwa sought something new –something meaningful to help her navigate an uncertain time.

‘I was going through a difficult period and looking for ways to support my well-being and personal growth,’ she reflects. ‘Because of my love for the English language, I decided to join a course at the British Council.’

What began as a step towards self-development soon became a deeply positive experience. With guidance from expert teachers, Marwa enhanced her English language skills and discovered a renewed sense of confidence.

‘The learning environment was supportive and inspiring,’ she says. ‘It helped me improve not only my language skills, but also my communication and public speaking abilities.’

For Marwa, the impact has been both personal and professional. Her improved English proficiency has led to exciting new opportunities beyond Tunisia, including training in podcasting with the BBC.

‘As a journalist, these skills have expanded my professional reach,’ she explains. ‘I’ve been able to participate in international conferences and access opportunities that I never imagined before.’

Perhaps most importantly, learning English gave Marwa the confidence to express herself freely – whether in a newsroom or in conversation with friends from around the world.

‘Learning English gave me the confidence to grow, connect, and dream beyond borders.’ Marwa Ben Messaoud, Journalist, Tunisia
