At the start of last year, youth activist Daa'd Al-Ghanimeen from Shoubak, Jordan was looking for an opportunity to develop her leadership skills and contribute to her community. She came across the Youth Connect project on social media and learned about its goals in youth communication, teamwork, and social innovation. For Daa’d, Youth Connect provided the perfect opportunity to tackle challenges and embrace new experiences with the support of expert training in leadership, communication and project management.
What made this experience truly unique was the chance to work with a diverse team of young people who shared the same ambition. Together, they designed and implemented an initiative aimed at reducing bullying of students with disabilities after their admittance into regular schools. This strengthened her sense of social responsibility and highlighted the importance of teamwork.
Throughout the programme, she learned strategic planning, time management, and how to face challenges with a positive attitude. She also gained skills in negotiation and building partnerships, which played a key role in the success of their initiative. Participating in Youth Connect was more than just a personal experience; it was a step toward creating real change in the community. She realised that young people have the power to make a difference when given the right tools.
At the end of the programme, she felt more confident in her abilities and expanded her social and professional networks. She began participating in other volunteer projects and earned the trust of her team members, who recognised her leadership qualities and chose her to lead “Be a Friend Don’t Bully” , an initiative developed under the Youth Connect programme, which addresses bullying against people with disabilities, by raising awareness sessions, focus groups and using the artistic theatre.
Daa’d’s involvement in Youth Connect became a turning point in her life. The experience has inspired her to look for more opportunities to work with her local community in the future. She believes that change starts with the youth themselves and is eager to share her story with others, encouraging them to seize opportunities that help them achieve their dreams.
‘When the energy of youth converges, bridges are built, and the future is shaped with a spirit of collaboration and belonging.’
